Mount Vernon grad Jeff Embrey named new boys basketball coach at North Posey

POSEYVILLE, Ind. — The Posey County rivalry received an extra dose of intrigue for next basketball season.

Jeff Embrey was approved to be the new North Posey High School boys basketball coach during its school board meeting on May 12. A successful coach across multiple stops, Embrey was also a standout during his prep career at rival Mount Vernon.

His coaching resume stretches back nearly four decades. Embrey has coached multiple sports with significant success on the hardwood in Indiana and Kentucky. He won four sectional championships and a regional (1999) at Austin before moving across the state border.

The 1981 Mount Vernon graduate led his teams in Kentucky to nine district championships and 17 regional appearances. Embrey notably won 181 games in 12 seasons at Lyon County, stepping down in 2019 as the program’s all-time leader in victories.

Embrey was a multi-sport star in basketball and baseball at Mount Vernon – helping the Wildcats win five sectional titles across both sports. He played two years at University of Evansville for coach Dick Walters and was a member of the 1982 NCAA Tournament team. Embrey later transferred across town to the University of Southern Indiana.

Embrey was most recently a junior high basketball coach and varsity baseball assistant at Mount Vernon.

North Posey finished 12-12 last season and lost to Forest Park in the Class 2A sectional semifinal. Rusty Seymour went 71-44 across five seasons with the Vikings and never posted a losing record before stepping down in April. North Posey hasn’t won a sectional championship since 1966 but has reached the final three times in the last five years.

The Vikings graduated three of their top four scorers.
