Not that long ago, USC women’s basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb hired a new assistant coach. Nikki Blue was brought aboard to replace Wendale Farrow, who left to become Dawn Staley’s new assistant at South Carolina. USC women’s basketball analyst Cece Clay, writing at her Substack, discussed Blue’s arrival:
“When USC Women’s Basketball announced Nikki Blue as the newest member of Lindsay Gottlieb’s coaching staff, it wasn’t just another hire. It was a calculated power move — and a symbolic one. USC didn’t just add a coach with professional pedigree. They added someone who knows Southern California, represents it, and has thrived at every level of the game.”
Clay later continued:
“Nikki Blue’s story mirrors USC’s story — a legacy rooted in California grit, elevated by excellence at every level. She’s been the prep icon, the college star, the pro, the assistant, the head coach. And now, she’s stepping onto a USC campus ready to help build a national champion. It’s not just that she’s back in L.A. — she never really left.”
Nikki Blue coached at four different college basketball programs. She then became an assistant with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and the LA Sparks. Her tenure with the Sparks never really got off the ground. She was set to begin the 2025 WNBA season with the team, but when Farrow left USC and Gottlieb needed a replacement, the Trojans called Blue. She accepted.
By all appearances, this is a high-level replacement for Wendale Farrow at USC.
