There’s lots to do in the Canton area this month, and Canton Repository entertainment writer Ed Balint is suggesting 10 events, including festivals, art shows and more.
1. ‘Five Guys’ art show at Cyrus
The “Five Guys” group art show at Cyrus Custom Framing & Art Gallery will showcase the work of Northeast Ohio artists.
Opening May 16, the exhibition features the “diversely exciting” artwork of Bruce Budd, Randall Slaughter, Lou Camerato, David Jentgen and Davon Brantley.
“My art radar is always on and these are five guys whose talent and vision have grabbed my attention in recent years,” said Dan Kane, curator of the exhibition.
Brantley is a Cleveland creator known for large, banner-like self-portraits. Jentgen, owner of the Art on 30 gallery in Minerva, specializes in photography featuring an atmospheric style and abandoned sites. Camerato creates assemblages “from a surprising array of found objects,” Kane noted. Budd of Massillon renders lifelike drawings of a host of characters. Slaughter, of Cleveland, combines calligraphy, collage and abstraction art forms to create “playful, kinetic, colorful works on paper.”
Cyrus Art Gallery is at 2645 Cleveland Ave. NW.
The May 16 opening will be 6 to 9 p.m. After that, the exhibition will be on display at Cryus during gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Cyrus is closed Sundays, as well as the first Saturday of the month.
2. Art show inspired by Oct. 7 terrorist attacks
Kim Goldberg will exhibit a new collection of paintings starting Saturday at Strauss Studios in downtown Canton.
“SINGULARITY − Materialized from Oct. 7” will be on display through June 13.
Goldberg’s work features abstract watercolors “that are her reflection of her processing the tragedy of the Oct. 7 terror assault on Israel,” said a news release from Strauss Studios.
Saturday’s event will feature a brief talk by the artist, a raffle of an original Goldberg art piece benefitting Neve Michael Children’s Village in Israel, live music by cellist Mike Koscso and light refreshments.
The exhibition “honors the lives of those who were taken, the deep mourning of their families, and the trauma experienced by survivors,” Strauss Studios said. “It processes the emotion of that day and asks: What do we see when the world turns upside down?”
Goldberg says she “pairs tangible materials (paper, water, ink, and watercolor) with the intangible (time, instinct, and introspection) to create unique visual expressions.”
The exhibition will be in the Upstairs Gallery at Strauss Studios, 236 Walnut Ave. NE.
