Mumaw was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marines upon his graduation, and earned a bachelor of science in weapons and robotic control engineering, according to a news release from the academy located just outside Washington, D.C.

At the Naval Academy, Mumaw was a squad leader and a member of the 33rd Company.

Chad Mumaw told the Record-Courier in an email that his son was born at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna and the family lived in Palmyra Township. He said the family moved in December 2015 to Tennessee, and Justin Mumaw graduated from Hendersonville High School in May 2022.

Chad Mumaw moved in March 2023 back to Portage County, and he said his son uses his Paris Township home as his address.

“Justin, your family and I are extremely proud of you,” Chad Mumaw said via email. “Your hard work, dedication, and drive you have shown following your dream has truly paid off! We are all beaming with pride and can not wait to see the great things you accomplish in your career.”

Naval Academy graduates agree to serve at least five years as commissioned officers in the U.S. military.
