Texas softball: Teagan Kavan, Longhorns complete sweep of Missouri

It wasn’t easy, but Texas softball picked up two wins Sunday to sweep its weekend series at Missouri and stay atop the SEC standings.

With the two wins, No. 1 Texas (37-3, 10-2 SEC) remains one game ahead in the loss column of Oklahoma and Texas A&M, who are tied for second place in the conference race.

Teagan Kavan (17-1), the Longhorns’ ace, capped a busy weekend  by throwing in both of Sunday’s games. In game one, she earned her second save of the season in a 4-3 win despite giving up a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. She threw all eight innings in the Longhorns’ 3-1 win in the second game Sunday and recorded 13 strikeouts.

Overall, Kavan threw 13⅔ innings in the three-game series, including five innings in her no-hitter win in game one Saturday.

Katie Stewart and Joley Mitchell paced the offense in Sunday’s doubleheader. Stewart blasted a three-run home run in the first inning in Sunday’s opener and Mitchell added an RBI single later in the inning. In the second game, Mitchell drove in both Ashton Maloney and Kayden Henry on a sacrifice fly to right-centerfield in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie in the extra-inning game.

“Any kind of sweep in the SEC is difficult, especially on the road, because everyone is a very competitive team,” Texas coach Mike White said. “We were able to hang in there — mainly with Teagan pitching; she did a great job for us.”

Texas will take a break from SEC action for a nonconference midweek matchup at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Texas State (25-11).
