Volunteers worked to clean up the Black Urban Farmers’ site in French Camp for the Cesar Chavez Day of Service organized by the Stockton Service Corps on Saturday, March 29.
“What we’re all here for today is not only for Stockton Service Corps, not only for BUFA, but also to commemorate Cesar Chavez Day,” said Maurice Montoya, Stockton Service Corps’ cradle-to-career initiative coordinator.
“Cesar Chavez was, and still, is a revered leader. He also inspired many other leaders throughout the United Farm Workers movement. There are many people that always aren’t recognized during Cesar Chavez Day and supported the work that Cesar Chavez did.”
More than 160 people showed up to pull weeds, prepare and paint fences and sow some seeds, to honor the late co-founder of the United Farm Workers.
“I really salute you young people that come out and even know about volunteering, because you really are off to a good start, that you even have the heart and mindset do that,” said Retha Hardy Jordan, co-founder of BUFA. “There’s a lot of work in farming and if we get large groups like this to come out , it’s amazing. A lot of hands make light work. And we really appreciate you guys.”
