Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball guard John Blackwell took the world by storm when he entered the transfer portal.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello broke the news on Monday, April 6. as Blackwell decided to enter the portal ahead of his senior season.
While Blackwell did indeed enter the portal, he’s also going through the NBA draft process. Only time will tell, but his 2025-26 season in Madison could have been his last at the collegiate level.
“After a lot of thought and prayer with my family, I want to share that I won’t be returning to play for the Badgers next season. I plan to enter the NBA draft and the transfer portal as I explore my every opportunity to take the next step in my career,” Blackwell posted on X.
“This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make because my experience here has been nothing short of incredible,” he added. “The work I’ve put in alongside the guidance and direction I’ve received from Coach Gard and his staff has helped me grow into a player I didn’t know I could become.”
Blackwell continued, “But that growth is exactly what’s driven this decision. I believe I owe it to myself and my family to chase the highest level I can reach, and this is the right time to take that step and leap of faith.”
“My time in Madison has truly changed my life. Through every high and every tough loss, Badger Nation showed up with unwavering support. I’m beyond grateful and I’ll carry that with me always,” he said.
Blackwell ended his statement by saying, “My prayer is that you understand my decision. Madison will always be second home to me for the rest of my life. This place and this community will always be part of who I am. Thank you for everything!”
Greg Gard was recently able to flip Australian point guard Owen Foxwell from LSU, but it’s going to take a lot more to replace the likes of Nick Boyd and John Blackwell.
