We need emissions testing. It is ludicrous for Republicans to want to do away with emissions testing in SE Wisconsin, as reported “Bill would end Wisconsin emissions testing,” April 28.
We need to do everything we can to improve our air quality. If emissions testing reduces our levels as stated in the article, then every contribution helps. “Lawmakers argue this is unfair to Wisconsin residents because only 10% of the ozone in the nonattainment areas comes from in-state emissions, while neighboring states such as Illinois contribute as much as 50%, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.”
While 50% of the contribution comes from out-of-state and needs to be addressed, the in-state amount of “only 10%” should be of concern to all of us who breathe that air. Although unfortunate, if a car owner needs to have repair work done to pass the emissions test and the repairs are costly, that is part of ownership, the same as having to carry insurance for that vehicle. While it may be unfair to those on a limited income, it would be unfair to everyone who has to live with higher pollution levels.
If our air quality is 10% better because we have emissions testing in place, then we can all breathe a bit easier.
