What happened to the post office at Mitchell International Airport?

The U.S. Postal Service office near the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport has moved to another location a mile and a half away.

In mid-April, the airport mail facility closed its 5500 S. Howell Ave. location and has since reopened at 552 W. Layton Ave. The new location is in a strip mall, next door to Oakland Gyros.

Airport mail facilities are responsible for receiving and distributing mail that is transported by air, according to the USPS. Unlike other post offices in the area, the Howell Avenue airport mail facility was also open late on weekdays and open on Sunday.

Here’s what to know about the relocated post office, including whether it’s keeping the same expanded hours.

What are the hours for the new airport post office?

The relocated post office will still have expanded hours, according to the USPS website.

The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It provides mailing and passport services.

Is there still a post office at the airport?

The Layton Avenue location is now the closest post office to the airport.

However, there is still a USPS mailbox inside the airport, near the entrance to Concourse C, airport spokesperson Harold Mester wrote to the Journal Sentinel.

Why did the Milwaukee airport post office move?

The airport post office lost its Howell Avenue lease amid the ongoing redevelopment of Mitchell International Airport, the USPS said in a March 2024 news release announcing the move.

Though the airport did not offer the USPS a lease renewal, Mester said the post office’s Howell Avenue lease ran through October 2025, and the USPS decided to leave early. The site is a part of the airport’s sprawling, multi-year construction project, but “there are no immediate plans for redevelopment” of the location, he added.
