Storms will develop across western Wisconsin in the late afternoon and evening. Straight-line, gusty winds are the main concern, especially for areas northwest of Madison.

“There certainly is the opportunity for some stronger storms,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Ben Miller.

Storms will begin around 5 p.m. along the state’s western border, reach Madison around 7 p.m. and weaken as they continue eastward through 9 p.m.

It’ll be humid throughout the state, with heat indexes in the high-90s by noon or 3 p.m.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday. After that, it should stay dry until the weekend.

“There will be some lingering rain and storm chances pretty much through the day,” Miller said.

After the cold front moves through, Miller said, most of the week will hover in the mid-80s with a reprieve from muggy air.

Humidity will increase going into the weekend, including Friday, July 4. While the NWS is forecasting a high near 88 degrees, heat indexes could reach the lower 90s.

There’s a small chance for storms in the evening on the Fourth of July, potentially interfering with fireworks plans.

“That’s a long ways out, so that part of the forecast can certainly change dramatically between now and then,” Miller said.

It’s also too early to tell whether storms would be scattered or widespread across Wisconsin for the holiday.

“At this time of year, a lot of times the night before dictates what’s going to happen the following day,” he said.
