SAN DIEGO – Bryse Wilson is back.
Again.
Three days after being designated for assignment and electing free agency, Wilson found himself back with the Milwaukee Brewers, who removed Lyon Richardson from the roster Aug. 11 as they continue to cycle through a thinned bullpen.
“You see the situation,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “You’re looking at our situation and needing an arm today because we used Richardson last night. That was the first time I ever saw Richardson throw.”
Because they are going with a six-man rotation during a stretch of 17 games without an off-day, the Brewers are using some roster gymnastics to keep the seventh and final man in their bullpen fresh and available to provide length on any given night.
Milwaukee has had at least one roster move every day in August except for one.
A week ago, that meant optioning Grant Stallings to Class AAA, then doing the same with Grant Anderson. When Wilson covered three innings Aug. 7, he promptly found himself as the next man out the following day. Richardson had his contract selected from Class AAA and two days later covered five outs with a depleted bullpen in the Brewers’ 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres Aug. 10.
The writing was on the wall shortly thereafter for Richardson, who was packing his bag in the clubhouse after the game.
Wilson, who cleared waivers and elected free agency, found himself right back in a familiar clubhouse.
“I had a feeling,” Wilson said. “I knew it was a tough decision they had to make to make sure they had coverage. But kind of how things played out, I cleared yesterday and we had still been in contact. They knew I wanted to come back and they wanted me back. With how last night’s game played out it was just good timing.”
Across 13 ⅔ innings since signing with Milwaukee in July, Wilson has a 2.63 earned run average and has not issued a walk.
“I don’t have the feeling I need to be perfect,” Wilson said. “I’m not trying to paint corners. I’m just trusting the stuff in the zone and that’s a big part of it. I’ve just gone through it enough to where being perfect gets me in trouble. I finally got to a point where I was like if I get hit in-zone and give up runs, I’d much rather do that than walk guys.”
