A new grocer will take over the former Sal’s Foods building in Allouez.
The Healthy Way Market, a Sturgeon Bay grocer, will expand and open a second location in Green Bay this fall, according to a Facebook post and a press release by the company on July 2. Sal’s Foods, 3823 S. Webster Ave., — formerly Austin’s Grocery Store — closed March 15 after 72 years in operation.
Owners of the Healthy Way, Adam Goettelman and Caitlin Oleson, said they weren’t actively looking for a second store.
“But we’ve always loved this place — and when it suddenly became available in March, we had to throw our hat in the ring and see what might happen,” the owners said in the post.
For years, the duo said, customers have repeatedly asked them when a second location would open in Green Bay.
“After a lot of late nights — and with support from Sal and Jessica at Sal’s Foods, the Small Business Development Center at UWGB, and Nicolet National Bank — we got it!,” they said.
The sale of the property was closed on July 1 for $1,018,000, according to public records.
The Healthy Way Market is an independently owned, full-service grocery store focused on providing local and sustainable food options. The store offers a wide range of products, including organic produce, gluten-free and vegan items, supplements, health and beauty products, and locally sourced meats and eggs.
In the news release, owners said Goettelman bought The Healthy Way Market in Sturgeon Bay in 2015. Under Goettelman’s ownership, it expanded twice from its original 800-square-foot home.
“This new location is a chance to bring that same thoughtful approach to Allouez,” Goettalman said.
In the release, the owners said the next steps will be to lightly remodel the space, upgrade equipment and build a team of employees. They expect to open between October and November and have plans for continued improvements for Sturgeon Bay as well.
Oleson said more than a second store, it’s an opportunity to strengthen both locations.
“More vendors, better pricing, and greater access to Wisconsin-made products will benefit customers in both Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay,” she said.
