A 20-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide, as party to the crime, in the death of 26-year-old Mark Burrell as he drove his car.
Jahree Wilkes is accused of being in a vehicle where someone fired off dozens of shots at Burrell, according to a criminal complaint.
The shooting took place Dec. 29 in the 2800 block of North 59th Street in the Sherman Park neighborhood.
Wilkes and another person attempted to destroy the vehicle they were in by setting it on fire a couple days later, according to prosecutors.
Wilkes denies being the shooter but said he was the driver, the complaint said.
The complaint doesn’t state what led to the fatal shooting, but the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office called the incident an “altercation.”
A witness told police she saw a passenger of black midsize SUV lean out the window and fire off a rifle at a gray Toyota. Police later found Burrell dead in the Toyota with multiple bullet wounds.
The complaint said police found 48 bullet holes in the car, but police recovered video that reveals at least 60 shots were fired.
Using video and neighbors’ accounts, police tracked Wilkes to an address and arrested him a couple weeks later.
He said in his interview with police that he was being directed to drive around the city’s northside by the other passenger and did not shoot.
