Politicians on UW board will not move Wisconsin 'Forward' | Letter

Jim Langdon suggested in his May 17 opinion piece that adding four legislators — two Democrats and two Republicans — to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents would reduce the dysfunction (“Adding lawmakers to regents would help prevent more embarrassment for UW System”.)

Really? How does that work? As we look at our nation, our state and local governments, we see a total flip/flop of ideas and governance as we move from one political party to the other party. It seems to me that the more politicians we have at any level, the less gets done as they cling to party lines at all costs.

This is a short-sighted idea which would only expedite more partisan battles and endanger educational and institution independence.

Since the 1900’s, we have embraced The Wisconsin Idea to set the goals for the University of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Idea means university knowledge should be applied to solve real problems — economic, social, political, environmental — and benefit all residents.

The official state motto of Wisconsin is “Forward,” reflecting the state’s commitment to progress and improvement. Adding politicians to the board is not the way to meet the Wisconsin Idea or move “Forward.”
