No one was injured during a train derailment Friday afternoon that left about 22 tanker cars overturned on a stretch of track in Dodge County.
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a 95-car Canadian Pacific freight train hauling tankers filled with crude oil had derailed between Maiden Lane Road and the Village of Reeseville in the town of Lowell at 2:05 p.m. Aug. 15, 2025.
Sheriff Dale Schmidt said some of the substance in the tanker cars was believed to have leaked from the derailed cars; however, there didn’t appear to be any immediate danger to the public. The sheriff stated that no evacuation was warranted, noting that the homeowner of the only nearby residence had chosen to leave the area voluntarily.
“Thankfully, there are no reported injuries in this incident, including the crew of the train,” Schmidt said in a news release.
The sheriff’s office is asking the public to avoid the area so that emergency crews can manage the incident. The CLR Fire Department (Clyman/Lowell/Reeseville), the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office and Canadian Pacific Railroad have formed a unified command. The scene has been secured, and we are currently working on plans to begin cleaning up.
Another Canadian Pacific train also derailed near Reeseville, in Lowell, two years ago.
