MANITOWOC – A well-known voice in the lakeshore area, Lee Davis, has died.
Davis, former owner of WCUB and WLTU in Manitowoc, passed away recently at the age of 90.
Davis started his career in radio in high school when he joined the radio club, according to the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. He had found his calling — and was hired by a radio station in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after graduation.
Lee Davis had a dynamic early career
“I just love radio,” Davis said in his WBA Hall of Fame video. “When I first started the job, people said, ‘Why are you getting into radio? TV is coming along. You ought to be in TV.’ I said, ‘But radio is fun.’”
Davis moved around the country in his early career. He worked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Philadelphia; and Chicago.
He was hired as the general manager of WCUB/WLTU and returned to Manitowoc. He became the sole owner of the station in 1988. He hosted the popular The Breakfast Club for more than 30 years. The show is still on the air today.
Lee Davis’ later years in Florida
He sold the stations to Seehafer Broadcasting Corporation of Manitowoc in late 2015.
He is survived by his wife, Joan. There will be a small funeral service in the Florida community, with a local celebration of life planned for sometime in the future.
