The last of six people charged with robbing a Kaukauna ATM last summer to have their case concluded has been convicted of the theft.
Johamnel Ortiz Sanchez, 40, of New Brighton, Minnesota, pleaded no contest July 7 to theft of moveable property between $10,000 and $100,000, as party to a crime. A misdemeanor charge of possession of THC was dismissed as part of a plea deal.
According to a criminal complaint, six people were involved in the robbery of an ATM at Unison Credit Union, 1000 W. Hyland Ave. in Kaukauna, in the early morning hours of July 5, 2024. When officers arrested them, they found five of the six individuals had Venezuelan IDs.
At sentencing hearings for Ortiz Sanchez’s co-defendants, attorneys discussed the possibility that some of the defendants may face deportation because they are not U.S. citizens. However, that is not a decision the circuit court makes.
Ortiz Sanchez’s sentencing hearing is set for 1 p.m. July 9 in Outagamie County Circuit Court.
At previous sentencing hearings, Outagamie County Assistant District Attorney Joshua Dryak said the six defendants were involved in a “theft scheme” to get money from older ATMs with security flaws. They downloaded malware onto the ATM, which allowed them to retrieve funds, and took $38,000 out of the machine, he said.
