The Milwaukee Brewers raised some eyebrows earlier Tuesday when they released their probable starters for the upcoming weekend series against the Colorado Rockies at American Family Field and didn’t include Jacob Misiorowski.
The star right-hander started an 8-3 victory over the New York Mets on July 20 but threw only four innings and 65 pitches before being pulled because he said he felt like his legs weren’t quite underneath him enough after having not pitched the previous 13 days.
His planned start opposite Paul Skenes in Pittsburgh leading into the all-star break had been scuttled due to fatigue.
“Everything’s been kind of planned out,” manager Pat Murphy said when asked about Misiorowski apparently not pitching again on the homestand. Brandon Sproat was lined up to pitch the finale against the Rockies on July 26 on four days’ rest.
“It’s subject to change, too.”
And that indeed proved to be the case as after Murphy spoke to reporters, the team reversed course and announced Misiorowski will be starting against Colorado after all with Sproat lined up for July 27 as the Brewers begin a six-game, seven-day West Coast road trip against the San Francisco Giants.
“I mean, we can alter things,” Murphy said before the change was announced. “We’ve just got to be mindful of everybody’s health.”
Milwaukee has understandably been very cognizant of monitoring Misiorowski’s workload, which currently sits at 115 innings after 19 starts. He threw a career-high 141 ⅓ last season between Class AAA Nashville, the regular season with the Brewers and in the playoffs.
Murphy was asked if it could be expected Misiorowski’s starts could continue to be spaced out to around a week apiece moving forward.
“I don’t think we’ll stay with that, and I don’t think we can afford to do that,” he said. “Plus, you’ve got to get them ready for September. We’re really in a murderous schedule. Getting them ready for that.”
Other injury updates:
Left-hander Kyle Harrison, who’s been on the injured list since July 11 (retroactive to July 9) with left forearm extensor tendinitis, is scheduled to throw what’s essentially a four-inning live batting practice session on July 25 with a minor-league rehab assignment to follow on July 31.
Rightfielder Sal Frelick is seeking a second opinion on his right shoulder soreness. He had additional imaging done on Tuesday and has been on the IL since July 18.
“The first opinion was not anything major in terms of new news,” said Murphy. “We knew that he had some stuff in the labrum. We knew he had some rotator cuff irritation, but nothing seemed to be earth-shattering.”
Infielder David Hamilton (left hamstring, right elbow) begins a minor-league rehab assignment with Class AAA Nashville on Tuesday night and if he’s able to play consecutive days without issue he’s expected to be reinstated from the IL this weekend.
Left-hander DL Hall (left pectoral strain) is scheduled to pitch two innings for Nashville on July 22 with an expected return to the Brewers by early August at the latest.
“He’s got to go back to back,” Murphy said. “He’s got to go multiple innings. But I don’t think it’ll be too awfully long.”
Outfielder Brandon Lockridge (right knee) begins a minor-league rehab assignment with Nashville on July 22 as well with a projected similar return to Milwaukee as Hall.
