Icing, freezing rain expected in Green Bay, could affect morning commute

Prepare for slick roads tonight and on the morning commute Jan. 6 in the Green Bay area.

Another round of freezing rain and snow will be hitting the area overnight and cause messy road conditions.

Here is the timeline for the rain and what to know about the weather today.

What is the forecast for Green Bay tonight?

Expect another round of freezing rain after dark. Once it gets closer to 7 to 8 p.m., freezing rain will expand into the Green Bay area. It will continue through the night and the area could see most of the freezing rain add up toward midnight, said Scott Berschback, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Green Bay.

“Unfortunately it’s going to last most of the night,” Berschback said.

The precipitation will last until early morning Jan. 6. The freezing rain will transition into a wintry mix with snow and some sleet until around noon. Then a second round will come in with snow later in the day.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where there will be more ice tonight between Wausau and Oshkosh, but Berschback said to expect between 0.05 to 0.2 inch of ice in the region

“We’re talking about some significant icing,” he said. “We’re most concerned on the roadways because most of the ground temperatures are either at freezing or below freezing so any rain that falls is going to freeze pretty much on contact.”

With the amount of icing, there is a risk of minor tree damage and possible power outages if any branches fall on power lines.
