GBAPS N.E.W. School of Innovation unveils new space on NWTC campus

One of several projects funded by the Green Bay School District’s 2024 referendum, a new campus of the district’s Northeast Wisconsin School of Innovation, opened Aug. 12 for the public to view.

“Today’s about a celebration, but it’s also about appreciation. For our students and their families, because we wouldn’t be N.E.W. without them. Two, our partnership with NWTC is so strong, and obviously being on their site and them supporting us in this, but the community as a whole, voting for that referendum to allow us to have the funds to do this,” N.E.W. School principal Jason Johnson said.

N.E.W. is a GBAPS charter school whose campus is located at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. It uses personalized learning plans to meet students where they are, advancing by showing they meet proficiencies rather than traditional assignments, tests and finals.

The school now has its own science lab, its own cafeteria and a “maker space” where students can do everything from cut wood to embroider to 3D print. It has multiple student services rooms now, so multiple student services staff no longer have to share a room and schedule around each other, and its own outdoor space for students to gather after school. It also has new secure entrances.

The projects were part of GBAPS’ 2024 November referendum, which also involved expansions at Doty Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Beaumont Elementary and Chappell Elementary, as well as the new construction of Starr Elementary.
