Chase Ross has his foot in the door in the NBA.

The former Marquette men’s basketball guard has agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, his agency LIFT Management confirmed with the Journal Sentinel.

The 6-foot-5 Ross will play on the Lakers’ summer-league team and participate in training camp in the fall. Exhibit 10 deals often include a bonus if the player spends at least 60 days with a team’s G League affiliate after being waived.

Ross showed his NBA-level athleticism with the Golden Eagles, and he averaged 14.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists as a senior last season.

In the pre-draft process, Ross had workouts with 11 NBA teams: the Hawks, Nuggets, Celtics, Grizzlies, Thunder, Hornets, Raptors, Lakers, Kings, Nets and Heat.

MU head coach Shaka Smart talked with several teams about Ross’ abilities.

“When he was in the role of being a ‘blend’ guy, when he was playing with some of the guys we had [that are in the NBA now], that was when he was at his best,” Smart said.

“All of us: him, me, those of us on the team, kind of learned that the hard way last year [when MU went 12-20]. But up there at that level, he’s never going to have to be The Guy. He’s always going to be a blend guy.

“He’s always going to be a guy that ‘Hey, go out there and guard this guy. Go out there and make a corner 3.’ So I am excited for him because he is a winner.”
