FOND DU LAC – A dumpster fire spread to a downtown building Monday evening, May 11, prompting an upgraded response and a search for occupants, Fond du Lac Fire Rescue said.
Crews were called about 6:06 p.m. to an alley near 18 Forest Ave. and were told while en route that flames were spreading to a nearby building, the department said.
Firefighters found multiple dumpsters burning, with heat, flames and smoke pushing against the building.
Crews cooled the exterior, put out the dumpsters and searched inside. No one was inside the dumpsters, and the fire did not extend into the building, officials said.
The three-story brick building was built in 1890 and formerly housed the P.B. Haber Printing House. It now has both business and residential space.
The cause remains under investigation by Fond du Lac Fire Rescue investigators and Fond du Lac police detectives. Alliant Energy assisted at the scene to check utilities, the department said.
