Fatal Milwaukee police chase is just a symptom of what's really ailing society | Letters

The Brady Street and North Humboldt Avenue crash was a result of police attempting to pull over a speeding vehicle (“West African identified as fatal Brady Street crash victim,” Aug. 2).

I’m at a loss here. Do we not try to apprehend an erratic driver to prevent a chase, or continue to chase?

If there is a chase, resulting in a death as this one did, the public is outraged and demands the police and city officials do something. If the police do not chase and the car crashes and kills somebody or even damages property, the public is outraged and demands the police and city officials do something.

What a damning situation to be in.

Is the answer more police patrols — in which case the city of Milwaukee would need to hire a few thousand more officers — more patrols in which the driver might have been intercepted and stopped by force if needed? Is the answer tougher laws that the DA and the courts must be compelled to prosecute, along with more perpetrators being thrown in jail, which would require more jails? Or are we hog tied and helpless?

My opinion is simply this: The eroding of family and family values along with no fear of punishment have brought us to this point.
