Ex-Packers tight end Marcedes Lewis is reportedly back playing in NFL

The Denver Broncos are signing 41-year-old tight end Marcedes Lewis to their practice squad, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter,

That makes him eligible to get promoted to the active roster for a game, which would make him the oldest tight end to appear in an NFL contest, at least in the Super Bowl era.

According to Schefter, no tight end in the Super Bowl era has appeared in an NFL game at 41 or older, but Lewis would be an immediate candidate to earn a gameday promotion.

Lewis has only played with three NFL teams in his long career, including five seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 2018 through 2022. He appeared in 81 games for the Packers, racking up 57 catches and six touchdowns, though he also has a reputation as one of the game’s best blockers at his position.

He last appeared in the NFL last season with the Chicago Bears, competing in 17 games. The majority of his career was spent in Jacksonville, from 2006 through 2017.

Lewis would be the lone member of the 2006 draft class active in the NFL, brought into the league the same time as A.J. Hawk, Jay Cutler, Santonio Holmes and No. 1 overall pick Mario Williams. Second-round picks included Devin Hester, an inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, as well as third-year Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans and former Packers receiver Greg Jennings.

The Broncos are thin at tight end, having lost Lucas Krull to a broken foot and Nate Adkins to a knee injury against Dallas.

The Packers visit the Broncos on Dec. 14.
