KIEL – A pole barn fire in town of Schleswig caused significant damage Jan. 19.
Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center received a 2:37 p.m. call Monday reporting a structure fire with animals trapped inside in the 21000 block of Point Creek Road.
Kiel Fire Department was dispatched at 2:39 p.m. and arrived about 12 minutes later.
Fire crews found heavy smoke coming from a 40-foot-by-60-foot pole barn. Inside, a 4-foot-by-8-foot chicken coop was fully involved.
Firefighters launched an offensive attack and extinguished the flames within minutes.
The department remained on scene for about an hour for overhaul.
The chicken coop was destroyed, and smoke and heat caused an estimated $15,000 in damage to the building.
While no people were injured, the chickens inside were found deceased.
Because of the size of the structure, cold temperatures and early call reports, mutual aid was requested through MABAS Division 128. Agencies assisting included departments from Ada, Cleveland, Elkhart Lake, New Holstein, St. Anna, St. Nazianz, Valders, the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.
Kiel Fire Department urges residents to use space heaters and extension cords only as directed by manufacturers.
