Can you have a fire pit in Milwaukee? Yes – but there are rules to follow

Here’s what to know about the regulations for outdoor fires in Milwaukee and other nearby communities as backyard bonfire season arrives in Wisconsin.

Can I have a fire pit in my yard?

Milwaukee allows outdoor fire pits as long as they’re made of metal, concrete or brick, according to city ordinance.

The fire pit needs to be covered to prevent burning embers from escaping and starting a fire. They must also be 15 feet from any combustible structure.

Grills are not subject to the regulations.

What about nearby suburbs?

How to stay safe around fire pits

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends campfires stay 25 feet away from shrubs and tents when camping. In the backyard, it recommends fire pits be placed at least 10 feet away from your home or anything else that could burn.

Closely watch children around fires and keep matches or lighters out of their reach.  Use a hood to keep embers from flying away and put out fires when everyone leaves the backyard.
