Bucks make Jenkins hire official; introduction will be open to public

A week after reports first leaked out that the Milwaukee Bucks were hiring former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins as head coach, the franchise finally made it official April 30.

Not only that, but the Bucks said Jenkins will be introduced at a news conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Milwaukee Art Museum on the city’s lakefront, and the conference will be open to the public as capacity permits.

More details will follow soon, but the splashy introduction will mark that start of a crucial offseason for the Milwaukee Bucks, in which the future of Giannis Anteotokounmpo hangs in the balance.

“Taylor is an innovative and driven coach who embodies the culture of winning and hard work,” said Bucks general manager Jon Horst in a news release. “His basketball intellect, comprehensive experience and leadership ability have played a key role in building successful teams throughout his career. He’s the right fit to take our team to the next level.”

Jenkins served as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2019-25, going 250-214 (.539) with four playoff trips and a franchise record for victories in a season with 56 in 2021-22.

Prior to that, Jenkins served as an assistant with the Bucks in 2018-19 on Mike Budenholzer’s staff. That Bucks team won 60 games and reached the Eastern Conference Finals, recording its first playoff-series victories since 2001.

“My family and I are thrilled to return to Milwaukee, and I’m grateful to Wes [Edens], Jimmy and Dee [Haslam], Jamie [Dinan] and Jon for their confidence in me as the next head coach of the Bucks,” Jenkins said in the release. “I know firsthand how important this team is to Bucks fans and the city of Milwaukee, and I’m so excited to get to work.”

Jenkins, 41, is a native of Dallas and becomes the franchise’s 19th head coach.
