Brown Deer woman sentenced for fatal shooting of Milwaukee dental surgeon

A 29-year-old Brown Deer woman has been sentenced in the 2025 fatal shooting of an esteemed Milwaukee dental surgeon.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge David Swanson on June 12 sentenced Keionna McGowan to three years in prison and three years on extended supervision in the death of Akintunde Bowden, online court records show. Swanson stayed that sentence in favor of three years of probation.

McGowan in February pleaded no contest to an amended charge of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon. She was originally charged in April 2025 with second-degree reckless homicide. The amended charge came as part of a plea agreement.

According to a criminal complaint, McGowan shot Bowden, who lived in an apartment beneath her, after he complained about how loudly she was playing music the night of April 19, 2025.

McGowan told police Bowden was “aggressively” knocking and kicking at her door and appeared intoxicated when she initially opened the door. McGowan shut the door and Bowden continued knocking. When she reopened the door, with her gun in hand, Bowden made a motion to kick it again and that’s when McGowan shot him, the complaint said.

Bowden worked as the dental director for Milwaukee Health Services, Inc., a nonprofit health center that provides health care services to underserved families in Milwaukee. He received a Black Excellence Award in 2022, and his colleagues in a statement at the time of his death described him as having a “compassionate spirit” and “visionary leadership.”

Bowden’s work mainly focused on chronic disease management.

Court records show McGowan has restitution hearing scheduled for July 9.
