Brewers 7, Padres 0: San Diego starter Griffin Canning chased in second

The Milwaukee Brewers will try to shake off a brutal loss and go for a series victory over the San Diego Padres in the teams’ final meeting at American Family Field on Thursday afternoon, May 14.

Left-hander Kyle Harrison (3-1, 2.41) starts for the Brewers while right-hander Griffin Canning (0-1, 6.75) counters for the Padres.

Luis Rengifo is on fire

Andrew Vaughn reached base for the third time in as many plate appearances in the fourth when he doubled to right-center and Luis Rengifo drove him in with his second single of the day to make it 7-0.

It was Rengifo’s seventh hit in his last three games, a great sign for both him and an offense that needs all the punch it can get.

Harrison, meanwhile, got through five innings having allowed five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over 99 pitches.

Brewers chase Griffin Canning in the second

David Hamilton opened the bottom of the second with an infield single, then went from first to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Canning.

Two batters later, Brice Turang doubled in Hamilton and two batters after that Gary Sánchez roped a two-out double to left-center. Vaughn followed with a bloop single to right to score Sánchez, ending Canning’s day.

Patience is key in the opening inning

After Harrison worked his way out of a two-on, one-out jam in the top of the first, the Brewers drew three straight one-out walks from Canning before Vaughn picked up an easy run batted in with a fourth free pass.

Rengifo followed with a two-run single to center, opening the Brewers’ lead up to 3-0.
