Dan Bice’s recent column on Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan not revealing her defense fund donors until she is legally bound is the opposite of journalism (“Dugan won’t name donors to defense fund until ’26,” June 9).
Since when is it a scandal that someone has followed the law? Are we going to now report when someone goes through a green light, or pays their taxes on time? Dugan cannot take cases presently, so no recusals are necessary. And she has promised to follow ethics regarding not taking donations from Milwaukee residents and lawyers.
How do we know this? She has a squeaky clean record and has always followed the rules — those who know her well, including fellow judges, say she wouldn’t even jay-walk. She also risks being held accountable when the donor list is revealed next spring.
All Bice’s column did was provide an opportunity for state Republican leaders to express their shock and dismay. Those are the same people who hypocritically treat the president of the United States, an ethics and law steamroller, like the second coming.
The real story is that thousands of donors — on both the left and right — have found reason donate.
