Aldi will close its West Allis grocery store this spring

Aldi will close its West Allis grocery store this spring, the company confirmed in a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The store at 1712 S. 108th St. is scheduled to close after the company made a “careful evaluation” of the location, Aldi said in a news release.

“Aldi will continue to provide residents great products at the lowest possible prices at our stores across Wisconsin, and we remain committed to making a positive impact in every community we serve,” the release said.

West Allis District 5 Alderman Kevin Haass said while the closure is disappointing, city officials were aware of it and are already looking ahead.

“We did know that it was coming, that they’re not renewing their lease,” Haass said. “But I have confidence in our city’s development team. They’re very active in finding new businesses and attracting new businesses to West Allis, so it is an opportunity as well in that sense.”

Fellow District 5 Alderman Martin Weigel, a former small business owner, said he understands the economic pressures facing retailers.

“Am I going to miss Aldi in West Allis? Yes, but I understand market forces and how the world works in retail,” Weigel said. “I was a small business owner for 42 years.”

Aldi said it will continue serving customers in the area through nearby stores in Milwaukee and Greenfield, as well as through delivery services including Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats.

The company said all employees at the West Allis store have been offered transfers to other Aldi locations and that no jobs will be lost as a result of the closure.

The news comes about a month after Aldi closed its location near North Sherman Boulevard and West Custer Avenue on Milwaukee’s north side.

“Aldi will continue to provide residents great products at the lowest possible prices at our stores across Wisconsin, and we remain committed to making a positive impact in every community we serve,” the company said in a statement.

Aldi did not provide a specific closing date.
