A Wisconsin police chief has been fired after he was arrested for OWI

A Wisconsin police chief has lost his job about a month after he was cited for drunken driving following a late-night crash.

Szvon Conway worked as the City of Darlington’s police chief for just over two years. He was fired from his position July 14 following a special meeting of the city’s police committee, Darlington Mayor Dave Roelli confirmed in an email.

“The City of Darlington wants to reassure residents that maintaining public safety, trust, and continuity of service remains our highest priority,” Roelli said in a statement shared on the city’s Facebook page.

Sgt. Nicholas Mantsch will lead the department until a new chief is in place, Roelli said.

The dismissal comes almost exactly one month after the Monroe Police Department arrested Conway and cited him for first-offense OWI, hit and run, inattentive driving, unsafe lane deviation and failure to notify law enforcement of an accident.

Monroe is a city in southcentral Wisconsin, about a two hours south of Madison and 40 minutes east of Darlington.

Police said that around 10:30 p.m. on June 19, Conway drove through a T-intersection at 13th Street and 20th Avenue in Monroe and struck a retaining wall, causing severe damage to his vehicle. Conway, who was injured in the crash, drove away from the scene but was later arrested.

Conway has worked in law enforcement for nearly 30 years, according to his LinkedIn. He was sworn in as Darlington’s police chief in March 2024.
