A longtime furniture store in Milwaukee's Third Ward will close March 1

A longtime furniture store in Milwaukee’s Third Ward is set to close March 1.

RH Outlet Milwaukee, formerly known as Restoration Hardware, will close after occupying its storefront at 224 E. Chicago St. for a decade. It’s the only RH store in Wisconsin.

While its Milwaukee location is closing, RH is opening a new outpost in Illinois on Feb. 26, according to a sign posted by the store. The new location is planned for Vernon Hills, Illinois, but it will still have a Milwaukee connection: The address will be 413 N. Milwaukee Ave. The store will be about an hour’s drive from the soon-to-close Third Ward location.

With less than two weeks until closure, RH Outlet has marked its inventory an additional 20% off. The store is known for luxury home furnishings, ranging from dining sets and lighting fixtures to rugs.

RH occupies the first-floor retail space of the three-story, 83,261-square-foot Third Ward Center. The century-old building also houses offices on its upper floors.

In September 2025, the Historic Third Ward Architectural Review Board approved plans to convert the building into a 133-room hotel. Middleton-based NCG Hospitality Group is working to open an AC Hotel by Marriot in the building, including by adding a balcony just above street level.

Work is scheduled to begin on the hotel late this year, Andy Inman, NCG Hospitality chief development officer, told the Journal Sentinel in an email.

The East Chicago Street building was first built in 1917 for Monarch Manufacturing Co., an apparel company, and then later occupied by Rubin’s Furniture, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society.
