MANITOWOC – Eight ducklings were reunited with their mom July 7, thanks to the efforts of the Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department.
According to a news release, the fire department received a report of ducklings trapped under a metal plate at the pier at 10:15 a.m. July 7.
The call came from a private citizen who said they were alerted by a “frantic momma duck who approached them looking for help.”
The release said a crew from the fire department met with TJ, a Manitowoc Parks employee, who showed them where the ducklings were believed to be. The crews obtained the tools they needed and four ducklings were safely removed from the area.
The crews then heard more squeaks from ducklings under other metal plates in the area as well. In total, eight ducklings were rescued from four different areas.
“Both momma duck and all eight ducklings were reunited, and after a bit of a scolding from their momma, they all paddled away,” the release said.
No injuries were reported. The Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department was assisted by the Manitowoc Parks Department and the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch.
The release said: “The Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department would like to remind all duck parents to make sure the terrain they are walking on is safe for their ducklings. A disaster was avoided today by concerned citizens calling for help. They are the true heroes.”
