Vote now for the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week for May 4-9, presented by Apple Dental Center

A perfect game in baseball and a run to the UIL state tennis championship match headline this week’s Apple Dental Center Athlete of the Week nominees.

London’s Crosby Zeller delivered a perfect game and 11 strikeouts against Raymondville and Calallen’s Drayton Mitchell shined on the mound and at the plate with a home run, five RBIs and 10 strikeouts.

On the softball field, Ingleside’s Kylee Ward helped lead the Mustangs past Cuero with back-to-back complete games, and San Diego’s Cylie Espinosa had a strong outing in the circle and at the plate.

Students can only be named Athlete of the Week once per season, per sport, and athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at ctsports@caller.com, by messaging the Caller-Times through its Facebook page, or on X @CallerSports. Please include statistics or honors for your athlete.

THIS WEEK’S NOMINEES

Audrey Arango and Tristen Dowless, Tuloso-Midway girls tennis — The Tuloso-Midway doubles team reached the Class 4A state semifinals and earned a state medal after winning two matches at the UIL State Tennis Tournament.

Cylie Espinosa, San Diego softball — Espinosa went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and threw a complete game in a playoff win against Jourdanton.

Jayden Guardian, Hebbronville baseball — Guardian tossed a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in a playoff win against Banquete.

Drayton Mitchell, Calallen baseball — Mitchell hit a home run, drove in five runs and struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings in a playoff win against Needville.

Mika Munoz, Santa Gertrudis Academy softball — Munoz went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in a playoff win against Poth, which included a triple and two RBIs in the first game of the series.

Victoria Torres, Flour Bluff girls tennis — Torres advanced to the Class 5A girls singles state championship match before finishing as the UIL state runner-up.

Kylee Ward, Ingleside softball — Ward threw back-to-back complete games and struck out 16 combined batters in a playoff series win against Cuero.

Crosby Zeller, London baseball — Zeller threw a perfect game with 11 strikeouts in an 8-0 playoff win against Raymondville.
