As the Texas winter and spring high school sports season marches on, The Standard-Times will continue accepting nominations for City National Bank Athlete of the Week throughout the year.
Plenty of action and outstanding performances remain in the high school sports season as local soccer teams head to the postseason and spring sports ramp up competition.
The Standard-Times will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Monday, and several standouts were nominated for the most recent City National Bank Athlete of the Week award.
The poll starts every Monday and runs until 11 a.m. Thursday, and the winner will be announced shortly after.
This week’s nominees
Reid Ballard, Wall baseball – In five innings pitched, he had 10 strikeouts and gave up three hits in a 28-0 win over Grape Creek.
Janiya Jefferson, Lake View girls powerlifting – She finished third in her weight class at the Class 4A Division I state powerlifting meet with a total lift of 1,180 pounds.
Trevor Koehn, San Angelo Central baseball – In seven innings pitched, he had 12 strikeouts and only gave up three hits and four walks in a 6-0 win over Brownwood.
Jimena Leija, Sonora girls powerlifting – She won her weight class at the Class 1A/2A state powerlifting meet with a total lift of 635 pounds.
Samarra Reed, Brady girls powerlifting – She placed second in her weight class at the Class 3A Division II state powerlifting meet with a total lift of 1,045 pounds.
Bella Reyes, San Angelo Lake View girls powerlifting – She placed third in the unequipped division at the state powerlifting meet with a total lift of 355 pounds.
Samantha Trevinao, TLCA San Angelo girls powerlifting – She won first place in the Class 3A Division I state meet in her weight class with a total lift of 970 pounds.
Jeremy Zavala, Lake View boys soccer – He had two goals and one assist in their 4-3 bi-district win over El Paso Austin.

How to nominate for next week’s award
Nominations for next week’s award are due by 5 p.m. every Saturday and can be submitted through email at sports@gosanangelo.com.
Students participating in all varsity sports are eligible for nomination. Please include an athlete’s statistics/times from a single game/event in an email to the San Angelo Standard-Times.
Athletes who win Athlete of the Week cannot win the award twice for the same sport. An athlete can be nominated in a different sport, but can’t win the award more than three times in a school year.
