US Open returns for 125th year. See tee times, how to watch, groups and schedule

The 125th U.S. Open returns in 2025 to familiar ground: Oakmont Country Club, the storied course that has hosted the championship more than any other venue in tournament history.

Once again, the best from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will compete side by side, joined by a refreshing crop of amateurs and rising talents, thanks to the event’s open qualifying format.

The result is a compelling mix of featured groups for the opening rounds, setting the stage for high drama as the world’s top golfers face the punishing terrain and relentless conditions that define the U.S. Open.

Heading into the championship, two golfers with Texas connections stand out as serious contenders — including the current world No. 1.

When does the tournament begin?

Defending U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau will open the tournament alongside Xander Schauffele and 2024 U.S. Amateur champion Jose Luis Ballester, with the trio teeing off at 5:45 a.m. CT on Thursday.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who recently became the sixth golfer in history to complete a career Grand Slam, will follow shortly after. He’ll be paired with fellow Irishman Shane Lowry and longtime Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose — the same opponent he edged out in a sudden-death playoff at the Masters in April to secure his final major victory.

The afternoon tee times on Thursday feature back-to-back groups full of former major winners, including two Texas natives.

Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson, who won the U.S. Open in 2016 when it was last held at Oakmont, will tee off at 1:14 p.m. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will start off right behind them with Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland.

What are odds for Scottie Scheffler? Who leads currently?

Texas native and former Longhorn Scottie Scheffler (+270) enters as the clear favorite to win his second consecutive major tournament following his recent PGA Championship victory. He has never won the U.S. Open before.

Close behind is two-time U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau (+650), who claimed the title in 2020 and defended it in 2024.

Rounding out the top contenders are 2011 champion Rory McIlroy and 2021 winner Jon Rahm (+1200).

What are odds for Jordan Spieth?

Fellow Texan and three-time major winner Jordan Spieth enters the tournament as a long shot at 70-1 odds. Though he won the U.S. Open in 2015, he hasn’t claimed a major title since 2017.

What are odds for Ludvig Åberg?

Swedish standout and Texas Tech alumnus Ludvig Åberg enters the U.S. Open at strong odds of 22-1 to win, fresh off a dramatic Genesis Invitational victory. Just three months ago, he captured his second PGA Tour title, coming from behind with a blistering back-nine to win the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.

Åberg is just outside the top five favorites, currently ranked No. 7 in the odds board.

Will Tiger Woods play at the US Open?

Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods will not compete at the 2025 U.S. Open, marking the third consecutive major tournament he has missed this year due to an Achilles injury. Woods, 49, announced in March that he successfully underwent surgery to repair his left Achilles after feeling “a sharp pain” during training. He didn’t provide a timeline for his return, but noted that he plans to “focus on my recovery and rehab.”

When did the US Open begin? Where was the first US Open?

The inaugural U.S. Open for golf kicked off on Friday, Oct. 4, 1895, at Newport Golf Club in Newport, Rhode Island.

Who won the first US Open?

Horace Rawlins won the inaugural tournament, finishing two strokes ahead of runner-up Willie Dunn with a final score of 173 over 36 holes.
