A Merkel man was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident about three miles east of Merkel, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a media release.
Skies were clear and the roadway dry at 3:45 p.m. as Andrew Aiden Kaufmann, 19, of Abilene drove a 2018 Toyota Camry south on Wimberly Road, according to the preliminary investigation by DPS.
Steven Greg Anderson, 62, of Merkel was driving a 2011 Ford F-150 pickup east on FM Road 1235, the DPS said.
Approaching the FM Road 1235 intersection, Kaufmann failed to halt at the stop sign, and his car was struck by Anderson’s pickup, the DPS said.
Anderson was not wearing a seatbelt, and the force of the collision ejected him from the pickup, the DPS said. He was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m. by Taylor County Justice of the Peace Robert Jones.
Kaufmann experienced minor injuries and refused transport for treatment, the DPS said.
