Two dead, one injured in crash during rainstorm south of Stinnett

Two people died and another was injured Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 136 during heavy rain, about four miles south of Stinnett, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened around 4:26 p.m. June 2 in Hutchinson County. According to a preliminary investigation, a 2025 GMC 2500 pickup was traveling north “at an unsafe speed during a heavy rainstorm with reduced visibility” when it lost traction on standing water, hydroplaned and crossed into the southbound lane, directly into the path of another vehicle. The pickup was struck on the passenger side by a 2000 Ford Windstar.

The driver of the Windstar, Cody Brooks, 37, of Borger, was wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, Jeremiah Rodriguez-White, 42, of Borger, was not wearing a seatbelt and was taken to Golden Plains Community Hospital in Borger with critical injuries. He later died at the hospital.

The driver of the pickup, Chad Clift, 43, of Amarillo, was also wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to Golden Plains with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The posted speed limit in the area is 75 mph. Rain was falling at the time of the crash, and officials noted there was standing water on the highway.

The Department of Public Safety is continuing to investigate.
