The Texas Tech Red Raiders had a productive scrimmage on Saturday with three weeks to spare before their season opener against the Abilene Christian Wildcats. Their roster looks mostly set for the season, and they should once again be one of the top teams in college football and contend for another Big 12 conference championship.
After the scrimmage, head coach Joey McGuire spoke with the media and talked about what went right for the Red Raiders in the scrimmage. When asked about potential new additions, McGuire joked about a big one that could help the Red Raiders this season.
“I know it’s not the five-for-five, but (Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian) made a comment with all these injunctions that maybe we’d go get Patrick Mahomes,” McGuire said. “If Pat wants to come back, I’m sure there’s a big check we can write him because I think he’s still got a year left and who knows with other guys adding these guys that were in mini camps and everything.”
Obviously, the Red Raiders can’t actually go back and bring Mahomes back from the Kansas City Chiefs. He left Texas Tech in 2017 and has been in the NFL for nine years. But that is certainly something that could help the Red Raiders if it were possible.
The Red Raiders are going with Will Hammond as their starting quarterback and the junior will look to build on a promising 2025 season that was ended prematurely after he tore his ACL. In eight games, he completed 63.3% of his passes for 680 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions.
