The Texas Tech basketball team has added another piece for the 2026-27 season out of the transfer portal.
UNLV transfer guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn has committed to the Red Raiders, 247Sports reported on Thursday. He’s the latest addition to the backcourt that also features Hofstra transfer commit Cruz Davis and Damarion Dennis from Wyoming.
Gibbs-Lawhorn has one year of eligibility remaining. He spent the first two years of his career at Illinois before going to UNLV, where he started all 35 games and averaged 20.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
What UNLV transfer Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn brings to Texas Tech basketball
Whether or not Gibbs-Lawhorn’s standout year at UNLV is sustainable at the Big 12 level is the biggest question here.
Gibbs-Lawhorn averaged 14.9 minutes per game his sophomore year at Illinois. In that campaign, he shot 25.5% from 3-point range and averaged more turnovers than assists. His numbers exploded in 34.1 minutes per game at ULNV where he went up to 41.4% from 3.
How Tech uses Gibbs-Lawhorn is the biggest question as the Red Raiders have their point guard in Hofstra transfer Cruz Davis. Gibbs-Lawhorn is listed at 6-foot-1, so this could be similar to the backcourt setup Texas Tech had last year with 6-3 Christian Anderson playing alongside 6-1 Jaylen Petty, which presented a lot of defensive challenges.
During the season, Lawhorn had a stretch where he scored 24 points or more in 9 of 11 games, which included a 42-point effort against Nevada.
