Irion County ISD announced they are hiring current girls basketball coach Don Coffell to be the next football coach on Wednesday, April 22.
Coffell served as the Hornets football coach from 2019-2022, helping lead them to their most successful season in program history with a 12-1 record and a state semifinal trip in his final season.
Irion County ISD announced Cofell will remain as the girls basketball coach after leading the Lady Hornets to a regional final appearance in 2025 and a 57-13 overall record in his two seasons at the helm.
Along with his experience at Irion County, Coffell has 16 years of football coaching experience at Iredell, where he spent the first 24 years of his career.
Coffell takes over a Hornets team with a combined 7-13 record for the past two seasons under former coach Tell Rutledge.
Irion County has a tough path ahead after the most recent UIL reclassification and realignment placed them in District 8-1A Division I with Eden, Menard, Sterling City, Veribest and Water Valley for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
