No. 7 Texas A&M (31-7, 12-5 SEC) did not get the chance to help build upon an already impressive resume after Tuesday’s midweek matchup vs. UTSA was canceled due to inclement weather, leading into this weekend’s tough road series against the Florida Gators, looking to leave Gainesville with a fifth consecutive SEC series win.
After starting 1-4 in SEC play, Texas A&M’s offense currently leads the conference in nearly every key category, led by four starters hitting at least .330, while star juniors Caden Sorrell and Gavin Grahovac have combined for 30 home runs, including Sorrell’s SEC-high 18 on the year.
On the mound, losing likely starting pitcher Caden McCoy and veteran relief pitcher Josh Stewart certainly impacted coach Michael Earley’s depth, but thanks to his starters, especially sophomore Aiden Sims, who leads the Aggies in ERA (3.44) and is tied with Gavin Lyons with a 7-0 record, Texas A&M’s offense has provided a cushion large enough to allow a thin, but talented pitching rotation thrive.
One of the main reasons this has worked starts with Earley’s decision to make Sims the Saturday starter and to keep the Sunday starting slot open for either Weston Moss or Gavin Lyons, depending on the outcomes of the first two games.
Since this change came into effect, Texas A&M has lost just one game, and as they say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” On Thursday, Earley stated that he will continue with the same lineup, leaving Sunday open after Weston Moss performed well through five innings against LSU during his first start in nearly two weeks.
Florida (28-14, 10-8 SEC) is one of the more unpredictable teams in the SEC, coming off a series home loss to Auburn, and dropped a midweek game vs. Jacksonville on Tuesday night. For the Aggies to have a shot at winning two out of three games, the Aggie bats must stay hot, and the bullpen must not be exposed late in games.
