Texas Tech baseball teams have had at least one player selected in the Major League Baseball draft every year since 1991, and the Red Raiders are almost certain to extend that streak this year. Left fielder Logan Hughes is rated a top-50 prospect by MLB Pipeline and a few other Red Raiders also could be chosen this weekend.
The MLB draft originates this year from Philadelphia and unfolds Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12. There are 20 rounds.
We’ll provide updates here when Texas Tech players are drafted, as well as any Red Raiders signees.

Texas Tech baseball players and signees taken in MLB Draft
LF Logan Hughes, Houston Astros, first round, No. 17 overall: The Astros made Hughes the fourth highest drafted player out of Texas Tech behind outfielder Donald Harris (No. 5 overall in 1989), third baseman Josh Jung (No. 8 in 2019) and second baseman Jace Jung (No. 12 in 2022). Hughes was one of the Big 12’s best all-around hitters the past two years, leading the conference with a .510 on-base percentage this year and ranking third with a 1.245 OPS.
DH-RF Caden Ferraro, St. Louis Cardinals, third round, No. 86 overall: After two years at Blinn College, Ferraro spent one season with Texas Tech, where he earned second-team all-Big 12 recognition after batting .374 with 8 home runs, 19 doubles and 46 RBIs. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Ferraro is an advanced hitter from the left side, which is how he made it into the third round. He grades below average as a runner and fielder; hence, the reason he made 36 starts at designated hitter and 16 in right field.
3B-SS Drew Gonzalez, El Paso Americas, New York Yankees, sixth round, No. 189 overall: Gonzalez was the first Red Raiders signee drafted. He earned Class 5A first-team all-state recognition from the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association with 13 home runs, 54 RBIs and 46 walks. The 6-1, 195-pound Gonzalez was the player of the year on the El Paso Times all-city team after helping the Trailblazers go 27-10-1 and four rounds deep in the Class 5A Division I playoffs before losing to eventual champion Aledo.
CF Kyeler Thompson, Los Angeles Dodgers, ninth round, No. 283 overall: Thompson transferred to Texas Tech from Galveston College and was the Red Raiders’ starting center fielder for two years. He started 48 games in 2025, batting .257 with 2 homers, 23 RBIs and 29 stolen bases, third in the Big 12. He started 51 games in 2026, batting .358 with 3 homers, 25 RBIs and 26 steals, tied for second in the conference.
3B Ryne Barker, Queen Creek (Ariz.) Casteel, Atlanta Braves, 11th round, No. 322 overall: The 6-1, 175-pound Barker, rated by MLB Pipeline and ESPN as a top-200 draft prospect, is one of Texas Tech’s top signees. He was honorable mention on the Arizona Republic all-state team. Queen Creek Casteel was a Class 6A state-tournament team.
C Matt Quintanar, Philadelphia Phillies, 16th round, No. 489 overall: Quintanar transferred to Texas Tech after one season each at Central Arizona and Blinn College. The 6-1, 216-pound junior started 53 games, batting .326 with 6 homers, 46 RBIs and 5 sacrifice flies, the latter figure second on the team. He threw out 22 base stealers, most in the Big 12.
3B-RF Connor Shouse, Seattle Mariners, 20th round, No. 610 overall: Shouse was a two-way player in his one season with Texas Tech after transferring from Georgia Tech. He started 30 games at third base, 11 in right field, six as designated hitter and five in left field, in addition to notching three saves in 11 pitching appearances. He earned first-team all-Big 12 recognition after he batted .366 with 10 homers and 66 RBIs. On July 4, he committed to South Carolina out of the NCAA transfer portal.
