Things looked pretty dire for the Texas Longhorns softball team this weekend. Already down in the series 1-0, UT was down to its final four outs when pinch-hitter Victoria Hunter blasted a go-ahead two-run home run to force a deciding Game 3. Texas made sure it the elimination game wasn’t close.
Led by hitting star Katie Stewart’s four RBIs and a stellar pitching by Texas ace Teagan Kavan, the Longhorns beat the Sun Devils 5-0.
Stewart’s single to centerfield in the third inning plated outfielder Ashton Maloney and freshman infielder Jaycie Nichols to give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, infielder Viviana Martinez blasted a deep triple to right field to score outfielder Kayden Henry.
Stewart struck again in the sixth inning with a two-run single to right field. Ann Wallace and Henry both scored to give UT a 5-0 lead.
That’s all Kavan needed. After struggling in the first two games of the series, the reigning WCWS MVP shut down the hot Sun Devils bats in a complete game shutout.
