Texas DPS IDs Petersburg man killed in Lubbock County pickup crash

State authorities have identified a Petersburg man who died in a two-vehicle crash early Tuesday in Lubbock County.

Jorge Calderon, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that was reported about 7 a.m. near FM 400 and County Road 5300, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Investigators believe Calderon was driving a 2003 Chevrolet pickup west on CR 5300 and approaching FM 400, where a stop sign controls traffic on CR 5300 before that traffic enters the intersection. Meanwhile, a 2023 Chevrolet pickup was traveling north on FM and approaching the intersection. Calderon’s pickup entered the intersection as the 2023 Chevrolet was entering the intersection, striking Calderon’s driver-side door.

Calderon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 2023 Chevrolet’s driver, 55-year-old Monte Swanson of Ransom Canyon, was taken to Covenant Hospital in Lubbock with minor injuries.

Both men were wearing seatbelts.

Other factors contributing to the crash were not immediately clear as the investigation is ongoing.
