After spending the last 10 seasons with Bucky McMillan at Samford and Mountain Brook, Dave Good has been named the assistant coach of the Texas A&M men’s basketball program on Tuesday morning.
The addition of Good brings years of experience and success to an already impressive Aggies’ staff assembled by McMillan heading into his first campaign as the head coach in Bryan-College Station, Texas. Since being hired by athletic director Trev Alberts in April, he has secured the No. 20 transfer portal class, according to 247 Sports’ Transfer Basketball Team Rankings.
Good’s reputation as an excellent recruiter will provide a significant boost to Texas A&M’s recruiting efforts. Before he became the assistant coach to McMillan at Samford, Good was initially hired as the director of player development and scouting in 2020. Now, he will continue his efforts as an assistant coach in the Maroon and White while helping establish “Bucky Ball” in Aggieland.
Before he became an assistant, Good earned his bachelor’s degree in sports studies from Central Michigan in 2004 and added a master’s in sports management from Eastern Michigan in 2010, while also earning a master’s in education at UAB in 2012.
Shortly after, Good became an assistant coach at Shepard High School in Shepard, Michigan. He helped lead his team to a 19-2 record and a conference title. Good then returned to UAB to serve as a video coordinator from 2007 to 2012, during which the Blazers reached the postseason in four seasons.
He then aided McMillan as an assistant coach at Mountain Brook High School, where the duo secured three consecutive 7A state titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. When McMillan was named the head coach at Samford, Good followed and spent five years rebuilding the Bulldogs’ program, leading them back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000.
If the Aggies want to have success, it will take experience and leadership from McMillan and his staff. Good brings a plethora of time coaching, recruiting, and developing players, while also leading schools to historic marks. That reputation could help Texas A&M greatly in recruiting this offseason.
