Texans RB coach breaks down Woody Marks' role in offense for 2026

What should Houston Texans fans expect from second-year running back Woody Marks as he takes over as the new No. 2 back for Nick Caley’s offense?

When drafted out of USC last April, Marks was expected to be a secondary option and primary pass-catcher for the Texans’ backfield. He was known for his hands, route-running skills and ability to make defenders miss behind the line of scrimmage during his college days at both Missisippi State and later out in Southern California.

Then, injuries and a lack of consistent play happened, forcing the Texans to expand Marks’ playing time into starting reps. He did well enough, averaging just under 4.0 yards per carry, though his postseason performance made the franchise realize it needed a new lead back.

So, Texans general manager Nick Caserio shipped off a Day 3 pick to the Detroit Lions in exchange for David Montgomery. Despite being a No. 2 back for the Lions, Montgomery had been one of the league’s more consistent players inside the red zone, totalling 33 touchdowns in three seasons.

What’s the role for Marks moving forward? As running backs coach Danny Barrett puts it, touches will still come his way, but the production will be up to him once he gets in space.

“He’s going to get lots of opportunities,” Barrett told KPRC 2 Sports’ Aaron Wilson. “Last year we brought him along slower, which was good to help him kind of learn the game. And once he learned the game, he played a lot faster. And you can see him now playing even faster.

“His role is going to pick up some third downs, special teams. He’s a kickoff return guy. But, more importantly, probably in the passing game as well. Just his level of confidence in the offense going into Year Two is at an all-time high right now. We’ve got to keep it there.”

Marks led the team with 703 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 24 passes for 208 yards and scored three more times through the air. When looking at where the Texans are under Montgomery, expect the former Trojan to be more effective in the latter side of things rather than the ground game.

“I think the key for Woody is understanding his role, which he does,” Barrett told Wilson.

Marks and the Texans return to the field for the start of training camp on July 21.
