Texans not making offensive personnel switches despite horrendous 2-4 start

No, the Houston Texans are not planning on making a switch on the offensive side after yet another underwhelming performance in Monday’s 27-19 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Get used to seeing first-year play-caller Nick Caley because he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

“We’re pressing forward with everybody that we have,” Texans coach Ryans said Tuesday morning via Zoom following the team’s flight home. “We’re collectively all in this together.”

Things have gone from bad to worse since the firing of Bobby Slowik and the hiring of Caley. Some aspects, such as the performance of the offensive line, are beyond his control. Other things, like back-to-back run play calls after it became clear that the Texans couldn’t establish a ground game, are.

Through six games, Houston is averaging 21.2 points and just over 300 yards per contest. That includes a 26-0 win over arguably the worst defense in the NFL, the Tennessee Titans, and a 44-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, which featured six defensive starters out, including All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith and defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike. Without those two games, the offense is averaging 16 points per game, which ranks 31st among units.

“It all starts with me,” Ryans said. “So, you guys want to point the finger at somebody, put it on me. That’s my job, and ultimately, it’s my job to get it fixed. So that’s how it’ll be, but we’re rolling on what we have, and we got to just all do better—got to coach you better. We got to play better. We got to execute better on game day. And look, as bad as it seems, I tell the guys at the end of the day, we’re still one possession from getting that game.”

The inability to run the football has been a concern since the days before Joe Burrow, but protecting quarterback C.J. Stroud remains a key weak point in finding any life on the offense. Last season, Stoud was the second-most sacked quarterback behind only Chicago’s Caleb Williams. Through six games, Stroud is tied for ninth in sacks (15) and has been pressured the 13th-most (74).

Williams, who has the Bears on a four-game win streak, has only been sacked 11 times.

The Texans take on the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday at NRG Stadium.
