A scary situation turned out to be nothing more than just a quiet moment for the Houston Texans on Saturday afternoon.
With fans in attendance for the first time this training camp, All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley took a hit during team drills after colliding with linebacker Henry To’oTo’o. Stingley lay on the ground for several seconds while being attended by trainers for help. Eventually, he was able to walk off on his own power.
“Yeah, ‘Sting’ is fine,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said after practice.
Houston could survive without Stingley for a game or two, largely because of the development of Pro Bowler Kamari Lassiter. In two seasons, Lassiter has gone from being an overthought draft prospect to perhaps the best No. 2 cornerback in the league, with some believing his ceiling is among All-Pro potential.
“He comes in every single day. He’s the same person,” defensive back Calen Bullock said Saturday. “Very consistent. Year in, year out, he shows why he’s one of the best corners. And he shows it by his game.”
Of course, what made the Texans’ secondary among the league’s best last season was the consistent play of both Stingley and Lassiter. Over his career dating back to LSU, the two-time All-Pro has dealt with injuries that sidelined him for multiple series or games.
The good news is Stingley returned to the field before the end of practice and should be cleared for full contact down the line. Hopefully, Saturday is nothing more than just a quiet mishap as the Texans look to avoid injuries early in the season.
Houston returns to practice on Monday.
